  • War on Poverty Act
    • Provided $947.5 million dollars for job training centres, loans to poor students and low-income farmers, and basic education programs.

    • Senator Kennedy formally proposed the idea in a major address at the Cow Palace in San Francisco on 2 November 1960
    • On 22 September 1961, President Kennedy signed the Peace Corps Act.
    • By that time, the first groups of Peace Corps Volunteers were already at work in Ghana and Tanzania
    • Would enable Americans to learn about public service, the duties of citizenship, and the international responsibilities of the United States to less developed countries
    • The program goals were ambitious: to help the people of interested countries and areas in meeting their needs for trained workers; to help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the people served; and to help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans
    • Number of volunteers in the field swelled to more than 15,000.
